The Menopausal Monster

How I see The Menopausal Monster
courtesy of Monsters by Kristen
It occurred to me the other night that my Emotions had taken full control of me. And even though I am fully aware that the Menopausal Monster has taken up residence , I did not realize that it had taken over. Now please keep in mind this Monster is not tamed or controlled easily and since I am trying to live a Simpler Life I am not into the prescription drug option. Not to mention we simply can't afford health insurance , we have to eat , pay rent , pay car insurance , buy gas and the list goes on and on. So treating the symptoms are a bit of a hit and miss. There's so much info. out there that is easy to get lost in it all.
To many people are still in the frame of mind that this Monster doesn't show it's face until a woman is in her 50's I am here to tell you this simply isn't true. Just as when a young woman becomes a woman is different so is the Monster waiting to come alive. Women as young as 40 have been known to have this creature take up residence and control their lives. So please don't think that you are safe until you reach 50. Get prepared now , many home / natural cures are recommended early on.
Also to the family members of those coping with this creature , they may have your loved one crying at the drop of a hat or they may all of a sudden have extra energy they have never had before. They may get freezing cold and then burning up within a matter of seconds. It is different for every woman and the list is much to long to post here. Just keep in mind this is NOT THEIR FAULT. They are being controlled by the Monster within and need your love , support and understanding.
Now I have tried vitamins and for a while they worked pretty well , but I am still searching for something to help with the emotional roller coaster I have been on for about a week now. I would love to evict this evil creature and am still trying to find some home treatments that actually work.
Here are a few things I will be trying. If you or someone you know has managed to Kick the Menopausal Monster out or at least control it please share your methods with me. This creature is driving me nuts....LOL

Sunflower Seeds : These are said to help boost estrogen

Vitamin D : This is supposed to help with the Mood Swings ( I will def. be taking more of this!!! )

Meditation and Breathing : Something I should be doing anyway but will add to my daily routine

  1. A friend of mine suggested I try Standardized Black Cohosh. I have taken it for over a month and feel it has helped with the emotional roller coaster.

  2. Thanks will look into getting some this weekend. My 80 yr. old neighbor just came over and told me to just stay positive. She never took anything for hers. She is awesome and so strong , I on the other hand think I need something to at least help. So I will give it a try for sure Country Girl :)

  3. I'm refusing to resort to the pharmaceutical route, as well, so I feel your pain. Unfortunately, the natural remedy route is not cheaper than the medicinal route. Even without insurance, you can get assistance for meds through free clinics, plus the the actual pharmaceutical companies have programs to help uninsured people obtain necessary medication. I do the natural route because, I am avoiding medication because of the bone loss implication. I already have mild osteoporosis and do not need to make that more pronounced. I use the black cohosh (Nature's Way, standardized, which is the purple cap). Not horribly expensive at about $10/bottle, which lasts a couple months. Plus morning and night I use a natural progesterone cream. Now, this one IS expensive. I don't even know off the top of my head, but like $30-some for a jar, which lasts me maybe 2 months. Then, I also began a new supplement that Dr. Christiane Northrup http://www.drnorthrup.com/
recommended called PM Phytogen, which was $17 for one month's worth. Not cheap when you add them all up.

I think the cheapest, if you want to really think in terms of cost, way to go is to see how you do after a couple months of NO CAFFEINE, no artificial sugars, no artificial ingredients of any kind. Just eating clean, drinking water, and exercising. I have had perimeno issues ever since I had a major surgery 8 years ago, so I've been through the gamut of remedies trying to get these hot flashes cooled off and I am only 48 right now! Estrogen is stored in fat, so losing 130 lbs in 6 months really put my body in a tailspin.

Depending on how severe your symptoms, some simple changes like this could get you a little further along in your journey to the other side.

Good luck. I know how much it can suck. My mom didn't go to the dr for her's either, but there is no reason to be a martyr. I just haven't used up all the cards in my deck yet, is my thinking.

  4. Thanks Jean it helps getting advice from those who have been thru it and are going thru it. The advice is priceless and I to don't want to have to use the drugs prescribed most of the time for many reasons. One of them in the back of my head the bone loss , that scares me a great deal. I have been unable to get the things you mentioned yet but am hoping to get them at least some of them after the first of the month. In the meantime I am taking my vitamins , meditating and trying to eat better when I can afford it. Thanks for sharing your story and advice I know it means a lot to me and I know it will be helpful to those who may read this.
